Feeding Koi - A Fun Experience at the Zoo

Koi, the simple but stunning fish. When I went to feed koi in the zoo, they were hilarious. Their huge mouth opened wide with every bite, but missed a lot.

It's an amazing experience to watch them fight over the little balls of nutrition. With a flick of a fin in the swerve around others, bubbles popped up out of the water. But unfortunately, most of them missed the shot at the pellet. Their gigantic mouth opens up like a perfect circle, aiming for the tiny ball. After stealing food from their companion, they chew it up, and go in a circle back to get some more, not wasting even a second.

Even though they sound peaceful underneath the water, they seem so energetic and engaged in the food. I could hear the sound of bubbles bursting, breaking the silence around it. The waves splashed against the water, sounding like a nice, tiny waterfall.

The koi colors varied from red, orange, yellow, blue, white, and a dazzling black. They have  marvelous patches of color, bright and bold. Some have various colors on their backs, and others are one straight color, but all of them are beautiful.

Not all of the koi are the same. Their age affects their diet greatly! Apparently old and plumper fish can aim better at the food from in the water, my guess is they have more experience. Young koi on their first try usually are a bit off the food targets, but then after they make tiny adjustments they adapt to the refraction of the water.
