Winter Break Vacation 2 - Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon is an exciting place to visit. My family went there this winter break. It is located near the city of Amarillo, Texas, where our first stop of the trip was.

In the early morning that day, we drove to the Canyon. As soon as we entered the gate, there was a beautiful panoramic view of the Canyon standing right in front of us. Being so amazed by the breathtaking view of nature, we couldn't wait any longer to jump out of the car and started to take pictures here and there.

After 30 minutes of picture-taking, we started our journey all the way down to the bottom of the Canyon. The steep downhill road is like a spiral winding around the mountain.

My dad stopped to let a brave family of turkeys walk pass the car. We also saw a deer not far from us.

At our first stop, I climbed up a large rock that was clinging on the edge of a small hill. I struck a pose to take a cool picture. My sister and I climbed up a steep hill, every step I took I felt a few pieces of rock and dirt tumbling down near my feet. I almost fell down, it was really slippery.

We followed the map of the Canyon to find a 6-mile trail. We parked our car in the sandy parking lot and hopped off. My mom noticed a sign and it said, "In the summer, make sure to bring enough water before you walk into the trail, otherwise you may dehydrate."

After a few seconds, I found a stick on the ground that was shaped like a hockey stick, it also was a perfect size for me. I used it to draw a white line on the ground all the way until I saw my brother running up a steep, large hill. I chased him up the curvy road while forgetting about the stick and leaving it behind.

The trail was quite long when I realized that the end of the trail was a huge mountain far away. The mountain was part of the canyon that was surrounding us.

My sister, brother and I ran up the trail leading to the top of the mountain. This one was even steeper than the last. My sister and brother helped me get up the rocky trail. On this mountain, I almost fell down. Once we got to about halfway to the top, my mom shouted for us to come down. The way down the mountain was even harder than going up.

We took a few more pictures in front of the mountain and headed back. At this moment I realized that I lost my stick. But luckily no one took my stick and it was still there where I dropped it. I used the stick and followed the line all the way back to the parking lot.

Palo Duro Canyon was a fun experience for me and my family. I hope we can go back some other day.
